Sticking with the knitting or what I know about football, the round ball kind, I think Michael Carrick deserves consideration for the long term job if he takes United to second place.
Remember, United still have to play Villa, are starting to get the 'squeaky bum' wins and I think have too much for Villa, so I am banking in 3rd place at the very least. Finishing second will entirely depend on the fallout from Arsenal now having a serious Title challenge from City and then who blinks and loses interest first. For both Clubs its win or bust and they won't care whether its 2nd or 3rd if they blow the Title.
